But why make him a WR even for a few plays? I can think of two ways it makes sense: 1) Because Gurley split out wide is often covered by a linebacker and Rams like that matchup. 2) Gurley going in motion - possible jet sweep - might really give the D something extra to think about.
But seems to me that his real value is maximized out of the backfield. (Ditto w/CJ.) Splitting him out wide, especially, minimizes his value; he's not THAT good a receiver.
