Depends on how big is big but yes, I would sign him to a contract worth of a high caliber QB. He's proven that he can play at a high level during the last two years. Now that he has a better coach he's been able to show that he can get the job done. However, he isn't P. Manning or D. Marino, but still among the top QBs in the league now.
For a contrast, look at how Minn. over-payed for Cousins. They may have done better keeping Case seeing how Case knew their system and liked Minn. I'm not real knowledgeable about this but I don't think Cousins ever showed at Washington that he had the level of talent Goff has shown.
Now he does not have to be signed but based on the question do you sign him at the elite status I say its a no brainer. He will have earned it and if he remains healthy we can expect him to perform at a high level. His worse games came during a slump where I think he was pressing and again only 2 games that really were bad and so what do you do. If he has avg games in those 2 games we are talking top 2 or 3 instead of #8. Top 10 is pretty rare company. to finish the season with a QBR over 100 exceeds Ram QB performance over the past Decade IMO.
Anyone not wanting to pay him what he is worth when his time comes is not wanting long term success for the team and not being realistic.
I don't think he is due more until 2020 but teams have to know when to sign and offer and that is Ram formality that they can address.
That isn't true at all. Some of us just don't automatically concede that Goff has proved to be worth a top tier contract on top of the fact that McVay has proven to get production out of his QB's, whoever they are, and that might provide a better path to long term success for the Rams.
Goff has generally done well to produce in this system but it's Goff's own fault for leaving this open for discussion. He had TWO slumps this year, not one, and it leaves some fans less than confident in him. Fair or unfair, it's still a concern.
So, does Goff make this offense go? Does the offense still function when the running game gets stymied? That seems debatable at this point and if so, it seems reasonable to question whether Goff deserves that top tier contract or whether the Rams would be better off spending that money on the rest of the team and risking bringing in another QB. Personally, I believe McVay could have this offense producing with other QB's so I'm not inclined to want to give Goff what the market "demands".
Whether the Rams can work around a large portion of their salary cap going to the QB isn't a primary concern IMO because the don't have to.
Which is all just conversation as I'm sure they will likely pay Goff but as successful as teams seem to be by having their QB on that rookie deal, I'd like the Rams to be the team to test it on a regular basis. Just reset every 5 years and keep the rest of the team built in such a way that any decent QB could step in and have success.
