Another thing that I think is worth mentioning about this. Somehow, the Ram coaches were able to quietly handle AD and without making a big scene, convince him of the “wisdom” of coming off the field. That was deftly done. My compliments to the Ram coaching staff there.
I really don't see AD's refusal to come out as a bad look. AD has the competitive drive of a Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Jerry Rice, etc.
One of the things that makes those guys so great is they want to play every snap and want the ball at all times. It comes with the territory. But you said all that.
The reason why it's not a bad look IMO is because players of that level routinely waive off the coaches orders. And the coaches let them. They give them a longer leash than other players. You handle a player with that level of greatness a little differently than your typical player.
If you look across sports at that level of greatness, what AD did is common.
