Faulks spike in production with Martz was all time increases

November 23, 2018 07:21AM
Martz was so good for Faulk and his career that I believe his increase in production has to be some of the most noteworthy turn around in NFL history. Faulk went from a pro bowl player to an all-time historical great. In his early years he had a couple of productive seasons mostly attributed to volume of touches. His first year with the Colts and last were pretty good, but nothing comparable to when he took off under Martz in 1999-2001. These increases in productivity when you look at the stats are staggering. You could say people have good years and bad years, but there is a line in the sand where he basically doubled is production from the first 5 years to his next 3 years. As an isolated data case, you could conclude maybe the light bulb went on or something like that, but this was a common theme for players under Martz that they just play better when he gets them. He developed them, motivated them, and put them in positions to use their great talents. That is actually the most important element of leading. Getting more out of your people.

These stats below are eye openers.

1) Yards per carry - 38% increase going from 4.0 to 5.5
2) Rushing Yards - 29% increase going from 1064 to 1374 average per year
3) Receiving Yards - 89% increase going from 881 per year versus 467
4) Touchdowns - 100% increase going from 10 per year to 20 per year

Faulk yards per carry

1994 4.1
1995 3.7
1996 3.0
1997 4.0
1998 4.1
1999 5.5
2000 5.4
2001 5.3

Basically, he was below a 4.0 yards per carry guy for his career, and elevated to like NFL all-time level at 5.5. take 1.5 / 4.0 and that is an unbelievable 38% increase in yards per carry. I don’t know if I have ever seen such a spike for an extended period of time. It isn’t like it was just one good year.

Rushing Yards

1) 1994 - 1282
2) 1995 - 1078
3) 1996 - 587 *very comparable to the struggles of Gurley with Fisher
4) 1997 - 1054
5) 1998 - 1319 This is good but note though it was mostly volume related because of touches his yards per carry was 4.1
He was average 1064 a year with the Colts in those 5 seasons.

1) 1999 - 1381
2) 2000 - 1359
3) 2001 - 1382
1374 average for those 3 years with the Rams.

Increase in production is 29% averaging the total yards at 310 yards per year

Receiving Yardage

1) 1994 - 522
2) 1995 - 475
3) 1996 - 428
4) 1997 - 471
5) 1998 - 908
Average 467 per year

1) 1999 - 1048
2) 2000 - 830
3) 2001 – 765
Average 881 per year

414 increase in receiving yardage
Almost doubled at 89% increase

Touchdowns
1994 - 11 rushing, 1 receiving – 12 total
1995 - 11 rushing, 3 receiving – 14 total
1996 – 7 rushing, 0 receiving – 7 total
1997 - 7 rushing, 1 receiving – 8 total
1998 - 6 rushing, 4 receiving – 10 total
51 total in 5 years = 10 per year

1999 – 7 rushing, 5 receiving – 12 total
2000 – 18 rushing, 8 receiving – 26 total
2001 – 12 rushing, 9 receiving – 21 total
59 total in 3 years = 20 per year

Basically doubled his touchdowns
