If I am McVay, I talk to the Head Ref before the game and let him know #99 is playing his butt off and he's getting held because of it. It's time to start throwing the yellow flags!
That's my definition of an elite DT.
First an effective DT draws extra attention and resources at the gameplan level because no offense can afford to let the defender who starts closest to the ball have an effect.
So he draws attention, including double teams. (And holding.) The extra attention ought to free up something else
BUT that;s not an elite DT.
An elite DT draws that kind of attention...AND makes plays ANYWAY.
