Well if they did that, I wouldn't complain. But I wouldn't do it. There's no basis or justification for it. The contract metrics don't work for that amount.
Here's some contract metrics. I know you know this stuff, but, it needs to be in black n white.
Using Von Miller, 19 M in 2016, as a touchstone.
1. give him the normal annual contract increase for positions like qb and wr, which is 12% a year. Counting back to 2016 that's 23.9 M in 2018,
2. give him the already established amount Suh and VM got in their big 2nd contracts, which is (actually a little more than) 80% of the top qb contract. That's 24 M.
3. give him the same percentage of the total cap Suh got in 2015 adjusted for 2018 and that's around 24 M. (This one I borrow from Ag, that's his metric.)
22 M is Donald signing for less than his market worth. 24 M by these metrics is his market worth. 27 M by these metrics exceeds his market worth.
But again I wouldn't complain because he is a core, elite player, the kind you lock in and build around, and given that I just don't complain about players's contracts. I only have issues if they tie up someone I don't see as a core elite guy but even then it's not the money, it's that you can only have so many core elite contracts so it has to be spent wisely.
