While it's true that NFL teams currently play 20 games each (4 preseason, 16 regular season) I hope you appreciate that playing a 20 game regular season isn't the same thing. If the NFL season was 20 games then the starters would be playing 4 more games than they do now with all the extra wear and tear that entails. Just looking at 1 guy, Gurley had 278 carries in 2016 and 279 last year. Considering that RBs typically wear down by age 30 as it is can you imagine what would happen if his workload was 348 carries over 20 games?
