Even the headline here gives away perhaps the biggest reason the Rams refused to pay Watkins $17 mil per. He's not a complete Receiver.
I like Watkins and perhaps Reid has got his attention where apparently McVay couldn't.
But I think we can all agree that Cooks is more the definition of a complete Receiver and it is why the Rams gave up a #1 for him and it is why he'll be around a few more years.
McVay got Watkins late. By that time, he already had the full offense installed and just needed to plug Watkins into his role.
He's talked about this many times. He never attempted to use his full skill set. And it was too late to worry about getting his attention. That issue itself misses the mark.
Cooks will be around if the Rams decide to pay him. They have never paid a contract the size of what he'll require so we shall see... I have my doubts but remain hopeful.
