I'd imagine that's normal for a GM because the players are kinda like their babies. They invest so much of themselves into finding and vetting them that they have to feel a huge ownership stake in each choice.
So I agree with you. I don't think it's abnormal or being a credit hog to speak the way he does.
My impression is, not everyone does it. IE talk like that. That no, it's not a norm. For example here's a quick tour of the NFC West (GMs Schneider, Ly nch, andf Keim).

Seahawks’ Schneider says no player immune from trade talks: ‘You don’t want to miss any opportunity’
The Seahawks have a number of big-name free agents hitting the market and limited cap space with which to re-sign them. Schneider made it clear that the team would love to retain defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson and tight end Jimmy Graham. Doing so, however, will be difficult.
“We’d love to re-sign (Richardson),” Schneider said. “We want all these guys back. But it’s like this constant puzzle and you’re trying to put stuff together all the time. It’s a big challenge. And the cool thing we have going for us is March 14 is when we can get back. We’re going to get back into the office, re-calibrate after studying this whole weekend, sit down, and make some sound decisions. Pete (Carroll) and I have a lot to discuss.”
The Seahawks enter one of their more interesting offseasons under Schneider and Carroll. Seattle finished 9-7 – the first season with less than 10 wins under quarterback Russell Wilson – and missed the postseason for the first time since 2011.
“We’re pretty dissapointed the way the season ended,” Schneider said. “We went 9-7 and you would’ve thought that we won two games. It’s a pit that sits in your stomach and really fuels you. And we’re excited about the challenges ahead, because we feel like we want to get rolling on this thing.”

from Lynch identifies three prospects who were most impressive in interviews[
www.nbcsports.com]
In discussing the team’s selection of McGlinchey on Thursday, Lynch explained how he and coach Kyle Shanahan weigh the importance of player interviews in the 49ers’ draft process.
“Kyle and I, just as a general philosophy, you didn't want to put too much stock in that because it's 15 minutes,” Lynch said. “I will say, however, just in my life experience, there are some people who command a room and who own a room.
“We have 60 interviews at the combine and he (McGlinchey) was a guy that came in and just kind of owned the room and everyone felt it. It wasn't just me. Kyle felt that way. Our coaches that were in the room felt that way, our scouts in the room. He's got a special presence to him. He's real. He's authentic and he's a badass and we like that.”

from Draft Decisions: NFC West[
www.rotoworld.com]
As we got closer to the draft, we started moving from evaluating the player to evaluating the person with these quarterbacks. Their personalities. That’s a little different. A lot of the position is played between the ears. Arguably the most intelligent quarterback in the class. Hobbies are reading, studying, the stock market… Keim saw him play twice live. Friendly with former OC Mazzone. Stage was never too big for Rosen… There can be a tendency to over-evaluate players. Fall in love with their footwork, mechanics, throwing and then pick them apart in the spring… More time we got to spend with Josh, the more we got excited… You can’t forecast injuries. I’ve seen some guys banged up in college then they’ve never had an injury in the NFL, and vice versa… His command of the room stood out at the Combine and in Arizona. Outstanding meeting with coaches and the OC on the board…"
