Here's an idea: an opt out clause after three years where the Rams get the right to match any offer that Donald gets?
Now that I think about it...
I'm beginning to suspect that an opt-out clause would likely be favored by the Rams - not Donald. As the article theorized...if this was a matter of making AD the highest paid defender, the deal would be done by now. But with a potential Mack contract looming in the background, he (AD) could be looking to reset the market for elite D-linemen (i.e. $22-$24M per plus $80M guaranteed).
I could easily see the Rams having sticker shock, but not wanting to seem dismissive by playing hardball (i.e. threat of tag). I could see the organization countering such a proposal with an opt-out clause (might even be two years). Of course, with an opt-out clause, guaranteed money gets reduced drastically. OTOH, though, AD could become the Darrel Revis of D-linemen.
There's a lot of room for creativity on both sides here. As long as both sides are keeping quiet, my assumption is that they're working through all of these options. Ram fans should remain patient and withhold judgment on either side.
Why in the world would the Rams agree to a 3 year opt out clause while paying AD a kings ransom in the process, BRO?
While they can keep him for the same 3 years relatively cheaply via the 5th year option plus two tags?
Think about it.
