For someone who prides himself on supposedly being analytical, to say that the Rams would be spiteful to essentially get the next 3 years as cheaply as possible for AD that is an awfully emotional response that in no way reflects pragmatic business realities.
If AD demands a structure and/or amount that the Rams deem not appropriate it isn't spite that keep them from signing him; it's good business sense. AD is not a one man team no matter how good he is.
I want him to be a lifelong Ram. But I seriously doubt he'll be here after 2 or 3 more years.
I said it would look like spite to make a player sit 2 years while he was demanding a trade.
I say that precisely because I am being analytical.
I think this whole "punish labor" routine is what's not analytical.
Either way it's not my major point or even close to it.
If the Rams tag Donald, the tag would be a lowball (look at the numbers). So in essence they would have underpaid him for the entire length of a contract plus 2 tags. That's bad management because you tell your team, work hard for us be a leader and be the best and we will force you to be underpaid. Way to build team morale.
Meanwhile my main point is that a player ot Donald's stature could force a trade if tagged rather than play under a lowball tag number while risking injuries that might make the rest of his career moot...he therefore faces never being paid what he is worth in the market.
All your "punish labor" ideas come from the completely unwarranted assumption that Donald is asking too much when in fact you have absolutely no real idea if that's true or not. And as long as we are going to just speculate, it's equally plausible to say that the Rams are lowballing. Saying either one is pure speculationat this point, There is no real objective reason to be making either claim.
....
Your “punish labor” comment is very revealing. So is the “lowball tag number” comment. Both seem very emotional and bias driven.
Let’s don’t lose sight of the fact that these negotiations come down to a business decision for both parties. Each side wants the best deal that they can get, so what’s new?
Rams are in the drivers seat and time is on their side.
I have a hard time seeing AD as a victim here, btw. He’s had an offer on the table for likely $20 million+, probably for 5 years or more, and surely including a ginormous guaranteed amount. Financial security for his family for generations and with all risk due to injury removed.
Let me put it this way. If AD were my son, then I, as his father, would urge him to sign such an offer. It would be the smart move.
Exactly......and if a player wants to sit out instead of getting tagged aka "low balled" at $16+ million dollars per year, I think it would be the player not the team that is spiteful.
Highly doubt a player would be that stupid, errr spiteful. The agent has to be smart enough to figure out he's better off signing a contract that works for both parties rather then try to play the hold out game
