As posted above, McVay has stated many times that he didn't really give TA a chance b/c he was injured when the team inserted his offense. By the time he came back it was too late; they had already moved on. Snead corroborated this.
So.... McVay says he limited his use because he wasn't available due to injury at a very crucial time.
It seems to me, according to McVay's own words, there is no fair chance to perform in his system. The system left TA behind b/c he was injured.
I think it's fair to stress that. I have been hitting more on the idea that McV was never really interested in incorporating the kinds of things you do with a Tavon in the passing game (Linehan, on the other hand, is). Though our emphasis is different, I think your focus and my focus are more or less aligned.
Meanwhile all you have to do is watch older games or highlights from 2014-16 and it is clearly obvious what Tavon could do in the passing game, whether or not McV was interested in using that stuff.
2014-16, 141 receptions for 1200+ yards and 8 TDs, combined with 116 carries for 817 yards and 7 TDs. Interesting weapon. Not your #1 guy but a nice weapon.
