Exactly. Why wouldn't Cooks want to "bet on himself"? He would stand to make much more if he had a choice just like Sammy did.
IMO, you can't play scared. The "oh my, we might lose him to some other team or we we can save a lot of money so we better pay him now" isn't always possible or the right approach. Just like Nick Foles. Just like Tavon Austin. Just like Olgetree. All 3 were paid too soon.
Besides, it isn't the end of the world by losing a 1rst RD pick which isn't guaranteed to succeed anyway. Especially where the Rams might be picking. Everyone was panicking when we didn't\couldn't\wouldn't resign Sammy Watkins. What did they do? They signed a WR who might even be better than Sammy. If Cooks cannot be resigned, they will find someone else to fill his spot.
