But maybe we could have signed Joyner for market value, which for safeties is a lot less than Joyner's deal...I defended Joyner a lot, but he's no Earl Thomas or Harrison Smith or Eric Berry... and Joyner will not play the role he does best—nickel, we have NRC to do that....
Contracts don't work that way. You can't just compare Joyner in 2018 to what Thomas got in 2017, because Thomas's deal is from 2014. Since contracts go up Thomas is just going to get eclipsed. So you can't say other safeties can't get as much as Thomas---Thomas's deal is 5 contract years ago. Berry got 13 M in 2017. That;s technically his 2nd contract but there was a tender in there too because of contract disputes. Either way 13 M is closer to what Joyner should not exceed because he's not in the top player bracket at safety. Getting more than Thomas at this point is meaningless. You don't measure today's 2nd contracts in contrast to contracts signed 5 years ago. That's why Cousins got 28 M in 2018 but Wilson got 22 M in 2015. Cousins isn't better than Wilson, it's just that Cousins signed in 2018 and Wilson signed in 2015.
