I just don't see the use of picking a guy high in the draft that is being groomed for the future, especially with such a glaring need at edge. And value and our draft position seem to be aligned on the edge position.
To me, the future is now...so going after an OT early is really not furthering our success this season. And Whitworth found his way to the Pro Bowl. He could last two more seasons.
They wouldn't be wasting a 1st rounder. If there's no one there they won't spend a pick on one (and contrary to some board illusion certain posters share, no one here actually advocates spending a 1st rounder if there's no one worth the pick. It's a ghost war with no one.)
If there is someone there worth the pick it's not a wasted pick.
And then taking someone after round 2 for LOT is pretty much exactly the same as picking no one.
So either they (1) pick someone at 23 IF and ONLY if they think the guy is worth the pick, OR (2) they pick no one at LOT, OR (3) they spend a lower pick on a guy, which odds say is really no different from option 2.
If there's no one worth taking at 23 chances are they try and get by and instead go for LOT in 2019. Though since they have 5 6th rounders they might as well give it a shot but the odds emphatically say that if they do that they are ending up with either no one or a future ROT.
