all guys have to do is not be a hero and stretch ball out. If it's 4th down, fine. But I think the touchback rule can be avoided with smart situational football by a player
So what about the player who stretched out to make a first down and the ball gets knocked out of bounds?
Automatic turn over ?
the fair comparison is IF IT WERE a turnover and guys kept doing it, I would call that poor situational football. But, since that has never been the rule,
The touchback rule goes back to who knows when. Kids are taught about it from a young age, yet still, they try and be heroes and stretch ball on on early downs. Carr was the worst example. Smart football used to be understanding there is another down, get it in on next play when you have a blocker.
Example, I had a QB who was a great athlete, very strong, and a couple of times he'd get a long gain on a scramble and the one guy would slow him, then two and he;d fight for every inch, but these couple of times a third guy would come in and force a fumble.
I would try to tell him, we will take a 40 yard gain, we don't need to risk losing the damn ball to make it 41.
On the goal line, of course, is different, you fight all you can, but if you have to stretch ball out where it can easily be knocked out, then don't do it unless it's 4th down. Take the gain, get another play inside the 1 (since you have to be around the 1 to stretch ball anyway)
Smart football. Some rules need to be changed. Others don't. There are higher priorities than changing the touchback rule, like the so-called "catch" rule. It's pu $$y to change rules because players won't play smart football and that includes Carr and Gurley and whoever else.
Secure the ball. Live to fight another down.
