There is a business aspect to this, and from a business only perspective, it doesn't make sense for the Rams to sign him to a HUGE contract while they still control his rights cheaply. But I think the Rams are ready to pay him a big contract, as long as he recognizes that they don't have to, and makes some reasonable concessions.
I disagree. There are a lot of reasons why it would make no sense NOT to sign him.
And the Rams bought in on the extension. Under the new CBA, at the start of a 1st rounder's 3rd year they can be designated for a 5th year option OR can negotiate an extension. Donald requested the extension and the Rams bought in on it when they could have tabbed him for a 5th year.
When you have a player of Donald's caliber, it's good management to accommodate him that way.
And it has been done before. Other players have gone in on the extension possibility in their third year.
