To me part of the urgency to do Donald's extension is so that the overlap with an eventual Goff extension is minimal. Probably just in 2020 and 2021. You pay Donald now so that all the guaranteed money is paid in 2018-2021. By that point he is 30 going on 31 years old and then year to year.
With Gurley I don't see them giving him a long-term deal and they don't need to. You pick up his $9.6M 5th year option for 2019 which he's absolutely earned. After 2019 assuming he is still an elite RB you franchise him for 2020. So yeah, in 2020 could those three be taking up major cap space? Yes. Beyond that, no. I would not give Gurley major money in 2021 (his 7th NFL season) or beyond. The number of elite RBs at that point in their careers is a pretty small list.
Snead is a big fan of analytics and stats. I read a study recently that said the average
elite RB plateaus around year 7 and slowly descends from there until year 10.
After year 10, production falls off a cliff.
I agree with the sentiment that as he approaches year 7 he's starting to get old for a RB. But given that he's elite, I don't see them jettisoning him right away.
I can see them giving him a shorter term extension that takes him into years 7-10 but is structured in a way where it's easy to cut ties if production plummets.
