About that 2nd rounder, Sun...
At the time, it not only seemed reasonable but it seemed to be a steal. That was because we all thought we were gaining an elite WR. Something we’d lacked since the glory days of GSOT with Bruce and Holt.
But that’s NOT what we got. As R2K pointed out, what we got looked like a 2nd tier FA.
So now, yeah, it looks like a bad trade for the Rams. That the Bills had a better handle on Watkins than we did. Much better.
Remember how the Bills originally liked Watkins so much that they traded two 1sts to get him? Then later chose not to exercise the 5th year option, instead giving him up for a 2nd plus Gaines? What does THAT tell us?
It’s time to place the blame where it belongs. Watkins was a fail in his contract year opportunity with the Rams. We can talk about his drawing coverage away ‘til the cows come home, but the bottom line is inescapable. He was a disappointment by any reasonable standard based upon his reputation, his trade cost, or his falling short of his perceived “potential”.
It would be a mistake for the Rams to double down and now pay him as an elite WR.
