If Whit only wanted to play two more years, why not just sign a two year contract?

They signed a short term three year contract obviously due to his age. Why did the sides choose three years?

The length of the contract is the only evidence we have of either sides intent so without more evidence to the contrary - and speculation definitely isn't informative - I suggest that plan from both sides is three years.
