Well NFL contracts more often than not are constructed to be shorter than they appear. And maybe when signed he'd been thinking "yeah, I might play here 3 years." Just saying that can change and it would hardly be surprising for a 37-year old OL to not come back again. In essence his three-year/$36M deal was signed to be two-year/$23M plus a team (and AW) option for a 3rd.
