Jeff Fisher wants to coach again, says 'there's been interest' from teams

Jeff Fisher’s book as an NFL head coach may not be shut just yet.
There have been rumors and reports swirling that he wants to get back into coaching, but his name hasn’t come up as a candidate for any of the current vacancies. Meanwhile, guys like Josh McDaniels, Matt Patricia and Mike Vrabel are getting calls from teams across the league.
Fisher has kind of flown under the radar, but he dropped a bombshell on ProFootballTalk’s podcast Wednesday, confirming he wants to get back into coaching, and that teams have expressed interest in him.
“Yeah, I have every interest,” Fisher told Mike Florio. “I love the game. I’ve got respect for the game. I’ve been very blessed to have done it for so long. I’m looking forward to that next opportunity. Obviously, there’s changes here going on as we speak and people have people in mind and that’s all well and good, but I’m going to keep pursuing my dream and that’s to get closer than 1-yard from the goal line in the Super Bowl.”
As for there being franchises looking his way as a possible head coach, Fisher wouldn’t say which teams were among them, or how many there are. However, he did say that he’s certainly on the radar.
“There’s been interest, yes, I’ll say that,” Fisher said. “There’s been interest. I’ve been kind of laying back, just kind of waiting and watching, but there has been some interest expressed, yes.”
As it stands right now, there are four jobs that are open for the taking: Arizona, Tennessee, Indianapolis and the Giants. The Colts are expected to hire Josh McDaniels, and the Giants are likely to grab Pat Shurmur, but both teams have to wait until the Patriots and Vikings are done with their playoff runs.
The Titans’ job is wide open, as is Arizona’s. Detroit is another team with a vacancy, but Matt Patricia is expected to wind up there. So in reality, there are only two openings for Fisher: Arizona and Tennessee. He obviously has some experience with the Titans after making it to the Super Bowl in 1999, so perhaps he’d like to return to Nashville. After all, he did say he wants to get “closer than the 1-yard line.”
With so few openings in the NFL right now, one might wonder if Fisher would consider being a coordinator or assistant. He put that to rest relatively quickly, though.
“It’s head coach or nothing,” Fisher said. “I love the game, but I believe that you’ve got a lot of tremendous talented assistants to handle those responsibilities. I’ve been doing it for so long and handled so many things over the years, I feel I’m better suited for a head coaching position.”
Fisher last coached in the NFL with the Rams in 2016, but he wasn’t able to finish out the season. The Rams fired him late in the season, giving way to John Fassel as the interim head coach.
Sean McVay, of course, took over in 2017 and led the Rams to a 11-5 record, which is the same number of wins as Fisher had in his last two seasons with the team.
