Corporations often get big name guys as Board Members in order to better market the company.
It would not be at all out of place for Kroenke to satisfy celebrity-driven LA by hiring a sparkly big name like Peyton Manning as President or some such thing, not because they necessarily need his expertise (although, like Chicken soup, it couldn't hurt), but because the promotional value and increase in credibility would be huge and hard to over state.
The NFL is, after all, the entertainment industry where perception is often more important than the reality.
