I refer you to the Benoit’s tweets thread, RFIP.
About Watkins Ram future?
You might find it interesting reading.
The Rams paid a high price to obtain Watkins in giving up a 2nd round pick.
At the time, they knew if he produced as a #1 WR what the cost to extend him would be.
In addition, they knew at the time the role as a deep threat they wanted him to pay.
I'm not buying Benoit's assertion that in this offense they don't want to allot much money to a deep threat receiver because if that was true, trading for Watkins at the price they did was ridiculously stupid.
Good points, dz.
To tell the truth, I was thrilled when they traded for Watkins. Heck, I thought it was a steal!
Tremedous value for a future 2nd plus Gaines when our CB position was healthy and looked deep.
I thought a 5 year extension was gonna be a mere formality.
Then the season happened...
TBH, I’m most troubled by my perception that Watkins doesn’t have the passion, the “want to” that I expected. Not nearly as much as I see in Woods and Kupp, for example.
And I don’t know if it’s about football smarts (to be polite), but there’s something not quite “right” about the Goff/Watkins playing relationship. Even as late as the Falcon playoff game.
So, what can I say? I don’t favor paying Watkins much, if any, more than Woods based upon what I’ve seen in this, his contract season.
I think that there are better ways to spend our cap dollars.
Just one man’s opinion, of course.
