And just for some perspective.
Check these stats out. [

Watkins was our 4th most productive receiver except for ypc and TD’s. And Gurley only had 2 fewer, with Woods and Kupp 3 fewer each.
4th in catches (only 14 ahead of Higbee)
4th in yards.
I think we should take a deep breath here before going nuts to extend Watkins at any price.
Yeah, I’ll buy the decoy argument. Kinda. But only up to a point.
This McVay O is predicated on spreading the ball around. It doesn’t need a Julio Jones or AJ Green superstar.
Sooooo...
Do we really want to overpay Watkins while trying to force a square peg into a round hole?
Could S&M find another Woods type FA at a much better price?
Think about it...
A couple of things...
1) I don't think many, if any, are advocating signing Watkins at any price. That's a bit of a straw man.
2) The spread the ball around recipe still requires legit weapons to work. You can't just plug in a Jag and get the same results. And so far none of the young receivers have shown they will be more than that.
This offense wouldn't still be #1 if you subtract a weapon that's proven to require a lot of defense attention.
3) A Woods type would probably work. But we all need to realize that Woods was a great success because he was a value signing. He had very little production - less than TA - in Buffalo so he required some projection to know he'd fit and be productive. IOW, that type of signing isn't all that common.
Any suggestion of who's the next Woods?
My vote is to keep things the same if possible.
