As I was watching it on TV I thought about what a powerful moment it was watching McVay talking to the defense. My impression is that he typically lets Wade handle the defense and Bones handle special teams (to the point that he goes off to conger up plays on the water cooler when the defense is on the field). I suspected that the defense would really respond to the Big Kahuna calling a time out just to straighten out a few attitudes. Based on the results that's exactly what happened.
