Don't want to get over-optimistic, but this is one of the best coaching moves I have seen ever and gives me reason to hope we have stolen the NFL's next star coach from under the NFL's eyes.
Of course I am talking about the timeout McVay took on defense, midway through the 3rd quarter or so, right after an almost-fight happened on the field.
I have no idea what he said, but I am guessing it was something like this:
- We are playing a great game right now
- We have nothing to gain by getting involved in fights, late hits or taunting.
- They're probably going to try to start something.
- Stay smart, stay professional and if someone cheap shots you, take a look at the scoreboard and walk away.
There was practically no chance we were going to need all three timeouts at that point. Taking a TO and coaching your defense at that point in the game was nothing short of brilliant.
Thoughts?
This young cat head coach of the Rams is learning a lot of things on the job.
He should have most of the wrinkles ironed out by the time the postseason starts.1
