Every great GM has misses in the draft. It is the hits that you need to focus on.
Donald, Gurley, Goff, Blockers, Tree, Hecker, Legatron, Copper, Kupp, JJ, Johnson, Samson, Everret etc. He has hit on some stars which is what you need to win.
Trades, Watkins, Barron
FA: Woods, Whitworth, Barwin
URFA: Longcare, Westbrook, Littleton, and many more.
To say it is all McVay is just ridiculous. Even great coaches (A Snead Hire) need great players to win and Snead has put together a roster full of talent and depth.
I understand that Snead, who reported to Fisher still may have some Fisher stink on him but look at the results. We have a playoff caliber roster and Snead put it together. We have a prodigy for a coach who was a high risk hire and Snead pulled the trigger. We have a Great QB and Snead pulled off the high risk trade to go and get him. We have an all pro running back and Snead took the high risk to go and get him.
When you take high risks you sometimes get very high rewards: Donald too Short, Gurley Knee, Goff paid a ton, McVay still in diapers.
A few high risks have not worked out Robinson great talent & college production but bad brain, Austin great speed & elusiveness buy never found a role, Quick great size speed but another bad brain. Each of these guys had some physical gifts that were off the charts and there was consensus that these guys were drafted pretty much in the right draft territory. They didn't work out but Bill Belicheck has guys that don't work out and he is a legend. It is the hits that matter for a Hit can last 10 years or longer look at Brady.
I think that Snead and McVay are on the same page looking for smart players that can be coached. For Fisher, who was the boss there was more of a consideration towards physical talent which was often very raw. Perhaps great coaching would have fixed Robinson, Quick or Austin we will never know. What I do know is that Snead Got us a great coach and a great roster and I can't think of what else you want from a GM.
