I can readily see where two posters could have different opinions on this one, Rock.
I lean slightly toward keeping Mannion as our backup.
Here’s my reasoning...
He’s a smart football player.
He’s familiar with McVay’s system.
He’s inexpensive.
He can carry the load for a few games if Goff gets hurt because McVay can scheme the gameplan so, plus there is no shortage of surrounding talent that would help him out.
He seems to be a good teammate.
The coaching staff clearly liked him enough to keep him on the 53, so it’s safe to say that they see at least some potential.
Now, if some team made them an offer that they couldn’t refuse next offseason, then I could see them going in a different direction. As you say, Mannion’s role will always be limited now that Goff is here.
And it’s always a good idea to draft a QB frequently. Just in case, you know?
I’m gonna trust S&M on this decision, of course.
