Back ups for playoff teams need experience more than they need familiarity with the system.
But, as I said in my first post, cost matters. And who you can get matters.
Mannion might be the best choice cost wise. But I suspect he wants to go somewhere where he can compete for a starting job. That is non-existent with the Rams. Back-ups need to be vets who've been around because they've come to terms with their roles and place in the pecking order.
When a young, never been a starter, is satisfied with being a back up, then he's not who you want.
I suspect that NE trading Garrapolo had much to do with the player saying he didn't want to be there anymore, and wanted a chance to start somewhere else. And the team being smart enough to know that it was a reasonable request.
I give NE credit for being a class organization for probably getting less than they could have had they waited a little longer to trade him. Garrapolo is virtually a lock to be the Niners starter next year and has a good offensive minded HC in Shanahan to help bring him along.
