Rams need to get a vet back-up QB for next year.

Because the Rams have turned a corner and will be considered a playoff bound team for the next decade, they MUST acquire a good vet back-up QB. There is very little chance that Goff will not miss a game or two due to illness or injury. Even if it's not long term. You don't turn a playoff team over to an inexperienced, young back-up should the QB go down for the short term (look at the Green Bay and Houston fiascos). Long term is a different. Long term you'd have to be amazingly lucky to have a back-up good enough to run a team successfully for a couple of months or more and keep you on track. Generally if your excellent starting QB goes down for more than a couple of games, you're hurtin'.

So the Rams need to move Mannion in the off season and go get that vet. Mannion knows he's at a dead end with the Rams and could probably get the Rams something in trade (a 5th perhaps), and he simply hasn't played enough that the Rams could expect him to run the team if a disaster happened. Of course, cost matters. Any kind of a vet back-up worth anything is from $3 mil to $5 mil or more per year. So I get it that the Rams might choose to stick with Mannion; I just think that Mannion, like all young QBs, wants and opportunity to start, which he'll never get with the Rams.

Who might they acquire for next year? It would have to be a pocket passer. A guy who could work well with the system they have.

Anyone got any ideas? I'd love it if the Jets got rid of McCown, for instance, and the Rams picked him up.

What makes you think Mannion is satisfied with being a backup?

Mannion not much less experienced than Garoppolo...
