den-the-coach
Wentz is a Stud and I doubt Fisher would still be the coach, but for the life of me, I cannot understand how Fisher went with Goff over Wentz. It has been reported that Fisher was against moving up, but once the Rams did, he had the choice between the two and quite frankly I don't understand how Fisher went with Goff as Wentz seemed more like his type of Quarterback. Wentz was bigger and came out of a pro style attack plus had called more plays on top of that was more of a lunch pail type of QB that was a better runner too.
Overall I wanted Wentz, he just seemed like the more obvious pick the only pluses Goff had over him was a larger body of work, better competition and Goff was superior in the red zone, also Wentz was not very durable at North Dakota State University and as Max pointed out in many posts, Wentz was a full two years older, but again I will never understand how if it was Fisher's call, he went Goff...I still believe the fact that Goff played at Cal and was from California was a major factor because if Goff played at Purdue for example and was from Ohio, I believe the Rams pick might have been different.
I doubt Fisher would still be the coach also. I don't think Wentz would have been good enough to overcome the coaching ineptitude of Fisher and his offensive staff. That said, if drafting Goff over Wentz ensured Fisher's departure, then it was worth it. I think the combination of McVay and Goff will be good enough to win a SB, even if Wentz is the superior QB.
It is quite baffling that Fisher preferred Goff over Wentz for the reasons you stated. Heck, Fisher could have gone fishing with Wentz in the offseason in Montana or North Dakota or in some other unexplored territory in the middle of nowhere that they both are so fond.
I do agree that the Cali connection played a roll in the decision. The Rams FO wanted a face of the franchise QB and lets face it, Wentz doesn't have that look. Ben Allbright has said several times that Kroenke directed the move up for a QB and Fisher made the choice. So there's that. And the word was also that Fisher preferred Mariota over Winston, and he also liked Manziel. And that kind of flies in the face of Fisher being all about the bigger physical QB. So I'm not 100% sure what Fisher's "type" is, even though on the surface you'd think he'd prefer the bigger physical guy. There is precedent here for Fisher not being the initiator of the trade up for a QB. As I recall, the Bradford-Foles trade was initiated by Snead and Demoff and then run by Fisher for buy-in. I believe its more than likely that Allbright is right about Kroenke directing the trade, or at least Snead and Demoff initiating it and getting buy-in from Kroenke. At that point Fisher was on the spot to select either Wentz or Goff, even though he may have preferred keeping the picks. In any event, I don't believe the trade up was initiated by Fisher regardless of which QB he liked best.
There is no question that Wentz looks fantastic so far. You can nitpick him for some stuff, but overall he's been great and he looks to me like the best QB to come out since Luck and Wilson in 2012. But there is a long way to go in this QB derby. As noted, Goff is 2 years younger than Wentz and he is also only 5 games into a completely new system with an entirely new coaching staff. And all this after coming from an Air Raid system that has had such a bad track record of preparing QBs for the NFL.
I do agree with Cowherd that Wentz, Prescott, and Goff are the future QB stars of the NFC. There are 12 starting QBs in the NFL under 28 as follows from youngest to oldest:
No. Player...................Age
1 Deshaun Watson.....22
2 Jared Goff................22
3 Mitch Trubisky..........23
4 Jameis Winston.......23
5 Dak Prescott............24
6 Marcus Mariota........24
7 Jacoby Brissett........24
8 Carson Wentz..........25
9 Kevin Hogan............25
10 Blake Bortles..........25
11 Trevor Siemian.......26
12 Derek Carr.............26
Believe it or not, Luck is 28 and Wilson will be 29 next month. They are not the young guns anymore. So there's the list of young QBs to pick from. All things considered, I'm happy with Goff.
