Wentz is a Stud and I doubt Fisher would still be the coach, but for the life of me, I cannot understand how Fisher went with Goff over Wentz. It has been reported that Fisher was against moving up, but once the Rams did, he had the choice between the two and quite frankly I don't understand how Fisher went with Goff as Wentz seemed more like his type of Quarterback. Wentz was bigger and came out of a pro style attack plus had called more plays on top of that was more of a lunch pail type of QB that was a better runner too.
Overall I wanted Wentz, he just seemed like the more obvious pick the only pluses Goff had over him was a larger body of work, better competition and Goff was superior in the red zone, also Wentz was not very durable at North Dakota State University and as Max pointed out in many posts, Wentz was a full two years older, but again I will never understand how if it was Fisher's call, he went Goff...I still believe the fact that Goff played at Cal and was from California was a major factor because if Goff played at Purdue for example and was from Ohio, I believe the Rams pick might have been different.
Have to disagree. It has not been "reported" that Fisher didn't want to move up, it has been gossip/rumored (and not by anyone with any inside knowledge or info, it's just ordinary gossip/speculation-presented-as-fact). Not everything that shows up in this or that corner of the sports media is "reporting"--it is often just talking head hot air.
Snead was on ESPNLA I think last spring and was directly interviewed by a couple of the main instigators of that particular piece of gossip. He answered them in detail and at length and pretty much silenced them.
(On top of it, Fisher HAS had a qb foisted on him, and we knew about it--he found ways to let it be known. So...why the elaborate act THIS time, which even included a reporter, Mike Silver, embedded in their war room during the draft. That would entail some oscar worthy days long acting if it was all a lie.)And I for one completely understand taking Goff.
You compare Goff and Wentz and they just have entirely different skill sets, and when you balance them out objectively, it's 6 of one and half a dozen of the other.
So then you just have to ask, what are the skills Goff has them make HIM a good pick, as opposed to the skills Wentz has that make him a good pick too.
Neither one will come out as "better," just both good AND different.
Either way you have to build around the skills of the guy you chose. Phil for example acquired receivers who can compensate for Wentz's lesser accuracy as a long range passer. The Rams in contrast want a full deck of different kinds of receivers so that they can program in anything they want, taking advantage of Goff's inherent all-range accuracy as a passer.
My best guess is that they will both be good for a long time, though it was always going to take Goff longer to get there. They started at completely different points on the scale. Goff's college system is notorious for causing qbs to be behind when they arrive in the pros; Wentz played in a pro style system. But sooner or later that will just even out.
Taking one over the other just gets down to which longterm skill set you value more. And then from that point on, as I said, you just build around that skill set, whichever it is.
