I can't imagine that the Rams would sign him to a big deal and then change his position next year.
I think that they expect him to get better at what he's doing.
You may well be right, Rock.
But here’s what puzzles me.
Tree is not a top 10 ILB, at least by any objective standards. He just isn’t. Yet they’ve agreed to extend him as such. Doesn’t make a helluva lot of sense for an astute HC and DC, does it?
So, I suspect that they may have other plans for him down the road. He played very well outside early on before Laurenaitus was released.
That, coupled with the evidence that Quinn is struggling in his OLB role and has a very big cap hit salary that is cuttable (or tradeable) next year?
And I do think it’s possible that Wade has a LB (or maybe even 2) that he feels might be more than adequate inside for the remainder of this season. With the intention of drafting or signing via FA an ILB next year. IOW, Wade might just think these two moves might improve his D overall. And what DC wouldn’t want to improve his D overall?
These are not the hardest dots to connect given Wade’s tendency to constantly evaluate and tinker as the season unfolds. His move of Brockers and replacement of Mo with JJ both look like shrewd decisions at this point. Why assume that he’s done?
Just spitballin’ here a little bit and playing a little devil’s advocate, I suppose. Something to think about, anyway.
