the more successful the offense will be. I mean if ever became an actual threat then the decoy thing would work better. It appears that McVay wants to give him the ball enough to keep the defense honest. And hard to argue with the results at this point. But if Austin could break a few big plays, Gurley and everyone is going to benefit from it.
Knowing the offense is very important to McVay. I think it trumps talent. Once McVay gets comfortable with Austin running routes (IF that happens) it will stress a defense even more. Austin and Mcvay have talked about it as something that is being worked on... whether it happens? idk. It might not have to.
Here's the thing: actual NFL teams and their defensive coordinators already know what TA can do. He evidently doesn't need to break more big plays for his decoys to work; they're working!
And I submit that they wouldn't work nearly as well with anyone else in that role. He isn't the receiver several other guys are, but they don't have the speed, acceleration, and elusiveness he has either. To have the quicks to go from horizontal to vertical the way he can is special.
What I hope to see is TA on the field more, getting the ball more, and a few more surprises thrown in off that jet sweep. I remember a play back in 2015 when he started in motion, got the pitch and abruptly reverse field on what was clearly a designed play. Surprised the heck out of the D and went for a huge play. The more guessing the D has to do, the better.
Plus they still haven't tapped some of the things we already know he can do as a receiver.
