That long pass should have been defended better, but if that series is a three and out, there would not have been a long pass play. Every mistake made which allows the opposition another opportunity to keep the ball increases their chances to score. The defense has allowed the opposition too many chances by allowing them to extend drives because of their mistakes. A good defense will limit the oppositions opportunites. The by product will be that the Rams offense will have more opportunities!
