That hit was as clean as it gets in the NFL. Yet, the Ref's still called roughing the passer on that hit.

So, you are rushing full speed, you get 1 ft from a clean collision and you are expected to STOP on a dime?

These "questionable" calls are just absurd to me.

I am all for protecting the players, but AD gave him a big ol' "Bear Hug" and took him to the ground as gentle as you can for a 285lb DT.

IMO? It's because AD launched, left his feet, and drove the qb to the ground.

Not that that is a penalty in itself, strictly speaking. Half a step too late isn't roughing in itself. But once AD arrives with the ball gone, even though yeah there was no way he could pull up, the ref sees the qb going down like that, with AD launching off his feet into him, and, the ref is going to err on the side of the qb.

My bet is, if AD didn't launch into him and just ran into him and shoved him back a little, there would be no call.

So even though it was reasonable to assume AD was close enough at the point the ball was thrown so that you have to say his momentum carried him, he launched and took the qb down. At that point the ref doesn't care about gray areas or a strict take on the rules. The thing though is, if we are against that, we also have to think, how would we see it if some defender did that to Goff? That is---launched into him off his feet to drive him to the ground with the ball thrown. Personally I wouldn't want that happening to Goff.

I think refs are just trained to call it if there is a question Attachments
