The player profile has changed with mcVay and so has the drafting.

He's been better no way around that.

This tells me that the primary problem was the previous desired player profile was faulty.

Except they have a decent record of getting good players.

So maybe that entire premise is flawed.

One key significant difference is that 2017 was one of the deepest drafts in recent memory.

...

There's a difference between a decent record and a good one.

There's also a difference between semantics and honest debate. I've had this discussion before and I put the Rams drafts in the "good" category. Don't pick on one word. Either way their hit percentage overall falls within the same parameters you find for top drafting teams. And yes the Rams have drafted great players. Donald and (IMO) Joyner for example. And of course they're so young it's hard to say about others like Gurley and Goff.

I like the fact that a guy like McV and like Wade know what they want for their systems, but then they also benefitted from a remarkably deep draft year. My bet is that if you went around the league, many teams will have a higher hit percentage in 2017 than they did in the previous couple of years, including teams that are normally good drafting.

....

It’s not semantics at all.

Whether it’s called decent or good in the past, my sense of this year is it is very good. Definitely better. Of course, it’s early so that remains to be seen.

Overall, the previous regime drafted decently. But a major issue is the huge disparity between hits on defense versus offense. They virtually had no hits on offense. That’s a problem.

To me, a large part of that is the inability to identify the right players for the scheme. I.e. Player profile. GW/Fisher knew what kind of players they wanted on D and which players would work. The result is that all of the hits are on that side of the ball.

Also for me, priority placed on the positions is part of player profile. You mention Goff and Gurley. I agree that the jury is still out on a few of the previous regimes offensive draftees as you alluded to. But both Goff and Gurley highlight the deficiency in the desired player profile of the previous regime.

There are strong rumors that Fisher didn’t even want a QB; Goff may have been forced on him. I don’t know for sure if that’s true but I do know that he never seemed to place the right priority on the QB position.

On Gurley, I don’t see greatness in him. I’d be pleasantly surprised if he ever falls into the category of great players the Rams have drafted. He seems to lack elite vision for a RB. The previous regime thought he was sooooo good that only a handful of senior personnel knew that they wanted him. And they made a big show about unveiling the card with his name on it as if they had just unveiled the holy grail. And I question, among many others, if he even has the traits of an elite RB. Faulty player profile.

I also had an issue with him being drafted in the first place. IMO, the previous regime prioritized the RB position far too highly. They had just drafted Mason the year before who looked decent. (This is without the benefit of hindsight of his mental illness issues.) They could have used that premium draft pick for other positions that were in far worse condition than the RB room.

And they minimized the WR position. IMO, that is faulty player profile. If the player profile was different under the previous regime, they too could have benefited from draft depth. Snead expressed misgivings this year about them not drafting a WR in the historically deep 2014 draft. I believe they didn’t b/c the previous regime did not prioritize the position.
