A bit of a riff on what L.A. Ram said---here is how I saw the Rams in March-July moving towards now:
A) DefenseWade: A
G Williams: B+
Goff and ORe Goff: anytime a QB doesn't have full confidence in where they might throw, their throwing motion is inefficient. It is normal to lose accuracy if you are 'thinking' while trying to throw. Jim Everett was awful in the first 6-8 games of 1987 in a new system. In 1988 he was very, very good.
Goff has his feet in the wrong place sometimes, and is too focused on the small picture;
so, the San Diego game will happen 3-4 games this year....but, the other 12 games McVay will keep the leash on him until he fully gets it. Goff is very smart, and was very efficient in his throwing motion in college. He had name Golden Assassin at CAL (sorry, see youtube). He showed all the excellent traits of a Golden armed thrower in college---that didn't disappear--it never does. He was just too overwhelmed in his first year with mediocre coaching, and finding where the sun is.
C) LeadershipWe all heard about McVay's leadership when he was hired..not just his intelligence; He is head and shoulders over any coach who has ever, ever even coordinated at 31 years old in the NFL. Only Tom Landry or Joe Gibbs could come even near McVay's excellence at such a young age;
Additionally,
for example, McVay has something that only 1-2 coaches a decade have: leadership and technical creating/coordinating and teaching technicianship; So, for example, the difference between Herman Edwards and Tony Dungy's success, for me, can be seen when we notice Herm is just not the great scheme technician that Dungy is....but both are leaders. Martz was a master schemer, but awful leader of men. Same with Linehan. McVay has both and that is rare....in fact 20-30 year coaching career rare.
He will be the best coach the Rams ever had...yes, including Allen, Knox, Robinson and Vermeil. I have no doubt about that---as long as he doesn't burn out....reminds me of Vermeil a bit. The free agents and the draft choice are all very smart and/or great techncians. Never seen that before going back to 1974. Yes, Goff can tear his ACL, and we will still be good because we have McVay; Wade can retire and McVay will find the 2nd best D coordinator ever.....this isn't just luck.
D) Past and PResent PredictionsPersonally, If I had known the Rams would get Watkins, and that Kupp would be so good, I would have said "at least" 8-8 in late May, with 10-6 possibilities (partially because of the weak schedule).....currently, because of our weak run game, and no O line depth, and need for better corner depth I don't think we reach 10-6, now --
all 5 OL don't look so great in the run game.....
funny thing is all 5 lineman have reputations as run blockers......Brown and Have are slow and hesitate much of time (too much thinking?)10-4 good buddies.
