I agree he seems a step slow hitting the hole...but he has always been that way. When things were going good for Gurley, he had plenty of big 20+ yard runs...but also still had a bunch where it was -2 yards to +2 yards. However, he wasn't getting hit behind the line of scrimmage as much. Today and last year it seems there is/was a defender in his face a step before he gets to the line of scrimmage. He is getting zero chance to see where the open seam is for the 20+ yard run.
When Gurley runs outside the tackles, or receives a ball in the flat....he seems to have better vision and gets bigger gains. When he is between the tackles is when he seems to be waiting for a hole to develop...but is not getting the time.
If Goff can consisttently show a vertical passing threat, it should only be a matter of time before the space between the tackles becomes more vacated.
