It Was Too Easy

Defenses crowded the box. Lots of defenders near the line of scrimmage. Grab, bump, deter, whatever you want to call it, but keep Britt and Quick from getting off the line, which was fairly easy to do. Swarm to Gurley or blitz Goff. The line could not hold off the rushers, the defense knew the ball had to come out quick, Britt and Quick and Kendricks could not separate quick enough, and Goff was a sitting duck. Bad options all the way around. More often than not, he did not even have an escape lane because the rush was multi-faceted.

I don't think it will be that way this year. I could be wrong, but Goff is already capable of hitting receivers if given half a chance. He will initially be given friendly reads by McVay, but will graduate to more sophisticated options (and that is OK). The bottom line is that defenses cannot crowd the box with Watkins and Woods and Kupp and Gurley coming out of the backfield, or do so at their peril. This will give the offense at least a fighting chance.
