That simply can't be overlooked, at least considered, IMHO.
Just how important is his specific position/role in terms of wins and getting the Ram's back into the playoffs soon? Can that amount of money be re-allocated in a manner than increases the chances of success?
You can answer that 'he's vital and no that money can't be allocated in a manner than supercedes the value of AD"... but, you certainly have to 'at least' stop and think about it. - JamesJM
laram and Rockram have been making that point for sometime now. I have already considered that point. I respect the position but like zn have to say that I disagree with it.
I agree with zn's point that elite, pass rushing DT's are extremely rare. Basic supply and demand economics teaches us that extremely rare things are the most valuable.
In addition to that, I disagree with minimizing AD's contributions by calling him a DT. IMO, that's a misnomer. He should be called an elite pass rusher because that's what he provides.
Apart from QB, rushing the passer is the most valued skill in the NFL. I see no evidence to suggest that it matters what specific position that pass rushing comes from.
You ask about the importance of specific position or role.
Specific position - e.g. DT or DE or OLB - is simply not that important. Specific role - e.g. pass rusher vs. run stuffer - is very important.
A teams need for pass rushers is among the highest needs. AD is an elite pass rusher who greatly disrupts opposing offenses.
I see no other person on their defense or offense for that matter more deserving of resource allocation.
