If u remember easily on in his tenure the Rams offense was decent with Bradford at QB and Jackson at RB. The collapse happened after Shotty left and Fisher started hiring TE coaches to run the offense. So he didn't single handedly wreck the offense like some want to use as an excuse. But Goff has a ton to prove imo.
I dont' want to get into the Fisher Wars, but I will say this much, because it's really about Goff. Goff was BOUND to struggle last year because he was THAT green. So far, going back years, few if any college Air Raid qbs have made it in the NFL...the closest is Keenum, really. Some say Foles but when he was with the Eagles under Kelly he ran a version of the spread, one that programmed qbs into fairly easy to execute spread-based concepts. I don't count Foles because as 2015 proved once he got outside the spread and had to play in a pro style system he basically melted down.
So Goff had a long way to go. A lot and I mean a lot of what we saw last year was Goff both struggling as a rookie qb and also struggling to learn and execute the intricacies of a pro style offense. People who want to put the blame outside of him IMO are just overlooking that. McVay himself said that one of the things that impressed him about Goff when they were first going over his 2016 play is that Goff never offered any excuses. He took responsibility for what was him. That's a very good sign.
Now, Goff has a better chance of developing not only because McVay has proven he can help develop a pro qb (Cousins) but because Goff has gone through his rough rookie initiation. He has some experience in a pro offense to build on. He ought to be better for it (I am one of those who is optimistic about Goff.)
