Guaranteed $ and hold out fines

I think it is more about guaranteed money in light of injury. Two more years of serious usage without that insurance might be his biggest concern and I get that completely.

On another note. Can a team set whatever fine they want when a player misses practice or is it set by the league or player agreement?
