Rampage2K-
The Rams have him locked up for the next two years at a very reasonable price ($1.8 mil 2017 and $6.8 mil 2018) and could franchise tag him for two more years if need be.
Essentially the Rams have him controlled for the next 4 years without breaking the bank and hold all the leverage.
I'm all for locking him up for life, but unless he wants to sign at a discount I'd be in no rush to dump a truck load of money on him anytime soon.
Every team pays about 50% of its cap to around 8-10 players.
With the Rams Donald should be one of them.
Given their future cap space they can afford it too.
The Rams threw away the leverage by basically stating by their actions they want to extend him. Which is completely fine with me. If you have one of the 3-4 best defenders in the game, you lock him up...you don't play "leverage games" with him and act like his pride and loyalty and leadership don't matter.
I think some people (not you, I don't think) believe this is a "greedy player holds out for more" kind of situation, a la Pace.
Naw it's nothing like that. It's 2 sides with the same interest---lock this player up for 6 years without playing games about it.
....
Right now, Donald is "playing games" meanwhile with the new rookie contracts and the franchise tag, the Rams are the ones with all the leverage....they could lock him up for the next four years for half of what a new contract would look like. Yes, they should sign him long term, but at what cost? If Donald wants his money now, he's going to have to be reasonable with his demands. The sooner he signs, the less the Rams should have to pay. That's all. He and his agent should know this....if he wants huge money he'll have to wait a few years and continue to play his arse off.
