Nick Mangold went on the injury list mid-Dec.of 2016. He had already missed 2 games because of knee issues and missed a couple of games before he was put on the IR due to his ankle. Maybe its likely that Mangold hasn't even been able to work out for teams.
He's been one of the best or the best Center for 10 years. Possibly his body is beginning to break down. I have no idea what he's asking for but he Jets saved 9M off their cap by cutting him.
I don't think Sullivan is a starting caliber NFL Center.I was hoping he was signed for depth. Center is not a spot you want to be weak at.
As of Feb.18th 2016, the Jets said he wouldn't need surgery on his ankle. Mangold, at that time, said "he'll know in a few weeks if he needs surgery". I can't find out if he ever had the surgery, but doctors insisted even if he had surgery he'd be back for the beginning of 2017 season. Mangold stated that he's not ready to retire.
So if his asking price is within our cap space (we can certainly create a bunch if we sign Trumaine Johnson to a long term contract) I think we should make a run at him. Center is a very important position in the NFL today. He could be the needed piece to finally get Goff and Gurley some space and time to unleash their talents.
