I think you are right on the McVay thing. And it's not an assumption. He's spoken several times about what he needs to make his offense run.

He broke it down in zones. There's the guy who takes the top off the defense. There's the guy who handles the underneath stuff, and then you have the intermediate zone. Tavon is none of the three but I think they will try to use him all over the place to create mismatches.

They still need a deep threat guy and a reliable underneath zone guy. That IMO is where Zay Jones fits.

Given this and the fact he was only targeted deep 13% in college it's evident he's not the deep threat. I hope they don't try to force it because it would be an extreme projection.

As for who will be the deep threat, I'm convinced they will draft that guy later in the draft, round 4 being the earliest. Here are several names that they have shown interest in (the first four they brought in for private visits; the percentage in parenthesis is the deep target percent in college):

Taywan Taylor (29.5%), Josh Reynolds (27.7%), DeAngelo Yancy (29.9%), KD Cannon (24.5%), Jamari Staples (35.6%), Shelton Gibson (40%).

Here is top attribute PFF has about Reynolds: "Deep-threat receiver. Has long strides and can break away from coverage once he gets up to full speed." It says something similar about Taywan Taylor and KD Cannon. Another name I'd watch is Mack Hollins.

Point is, most of the WRs they brought in for visits that are projected to go in the later rounds are deep threat types.


P.S. -- I'm a big fan of Godwins but they aren't drafting him. I officially believe they will draft Zay. I have it on pretty good authority that he will be the target if one other coveted player is gone before him.
