Yes things happen, but what actually happened in this case is that Vermeil signed Warner a year before hiring Martz.

When Martz arrived he wanted to sign Paul Justin as his #2 qb. Vermeil said no, Warner is going to be the #2 qb, period---there wouldn't even be a competition for the #2, it was going to be Warner.

And btw that story comes from Martz himself.
