There is no way to change that Billy w/o hurting the game.
Short of making it flag football there is nothing else you can do.
Big guys running at each other is going to result in high impact.
That's the game.
Yeah, I know it's a collision sport. High impact. But there are plenty of things they could do to minimize the damage and reduce the likelihood of death -- again, in the moment and incrementally.
You can hit someone hard and not take their head off. You can have limits regarding when and where you can make those hits. Going back to Goff . . . He was inches from the sideline. No reason for a player to fly across the field and crush the guy in order to move him two inches. I'd also make it illegal to crash into a player once he's gotten a touchdown. It's standard stuff to do that, and it's just flat out unnecessary.
Player scores? That should be that. No hit on a player who scores. If possession of the football is in doubt, that's a different story. But once he's across with the ball in his possession . . . . play's over.
No spearing of any kind, at any place on the field, by anyone, against anyone.
No more turf. Grass-only fields.
For starters . . .
And, again, teach kids how to wrap-up tackle, not try to kill the other guy. Little League on up. That won't hurt the game in the slightest, and will help its popularity, especially for families worried about their kids' health.
