That was neither late illegal or over the top.
At that point Goff is a runner, and Sherman actually led with the shoulder.
Goff needs to protect himself when he's out of the pocket!
He' ll learn!!
Don't misunderstand me, la.
I'm not claiming that Goff was defenseless, nor that he shouldn't be tackled.
Just that Sherman went in unnecessarily high. And there was helmet to helmet. Thus the necessity of the officials upstairs ordering the concussion protocol.
Sherman knew he had a clear shot on the QB that couldn't see him, and he took it.
I lost a ton of respect for Sherman there.
We see that constantly throughout each game, across the league. A player is close to the sidelines? You push him out. Smashing him in the head just isn't necessary. He was inches from the sideline.
I know a lot of fans disagree with this, but I think the league is going to have to get a lot tougher on protecting players -- all of them, not just the QB. It's going to need to throw players out of games for anything approaching spearing. Any kind of intentional helmet to helmet hits, throw them out, and work hard with coaches from Little League on up to teach wrap-up tackling instead of ESPN highlight hits.
NFL players are too big and too fast to keep this up. One of these days, we're going to witness someone getting killed during a game. I mean,
literally killed. And the evidence is overwhelming that these hits lead to significant brain damage already.
It needs to stop.
